The social organization standard of “Low Carbon Emission Steel Evaluation Method” approved

China Iron and Steel Association, in collaboration with China Baowu Ouyeel, successfully convened the review meeting for the “Low Carbon Emission Steel Evaluation Method” social organization standard in Shanghai on September 29th. Over 70 experts and representatives from prestigious organizations such as China Baowu, Ansteel, CITIC Pacific, Shougang, Jiuquan Steel, Northeastern University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Metallurgical Corporation of China, Metallurgical Standardization Institute, and Metallurgical Planning Institute, attended the meeting either online or in person.

Jiang Wei, the Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of CISA, graced the event with his presence and addressed the gathering. The meeting was co-chaired by Feng Chao, the Deputy Secretary-General of  CISA, and Liu Yinghao, the convener of the Low Carbon Emission Steel Standard Expert Working Group and Technical Director of the Baowu Central Research Institute.

Jiang Wei highlighted the industry engagement and the significant attention given to the development of the standard, which has been a testament to the industry’s enthusiasm and unity. The expert group, established in January 2024, has culminated in a low carbon emission steel evaluation system that aligns with international standards and the practical requirement of China’s steel industry.

This standard stands out globally, being based on a substantial dataset of nearly 35 million tons of crude steel product carbon emissions, making it the most comprehensive of its kind. The development process has been marked by active international engagement, garnering significant attention from organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the Worldsteel.

Jiang Wei emphasized the importance of further leveraging the expertise of the group to encourage more leading enterprises and distinguished experts in the industry to actively participate in the standardization work. He also stressed the need to attract experts from both upstream and downstream sectors to strengthen the standard’s role as a vital link between different industry segments.

Moving forward, the focus will be on promoting the adoption and application of China’s low carbon emission steel standards, fostering alignment with international standards, and facilitating mutual recognition.
