China’s Steel Full Industry Chain EPD heralds a new era of international collaboration
Jiang Wei, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), along with key members of the secretariat of the China Steel Full Industry Chain EPD Platform, signed an MOU with their Swedish and Italian counterparts, aiming to foster mutual recognition and collaboration, and propel the global acknowledgment of China’s EPD platform within the steel industry.
This groundbreaking partnership is a testament to the significant strides China’s steel industry has made in securing international recognition, underscoring its growing “soft power” in the realm of global steel sustainability and low-carbon initiatives. It signifies a pivotal move towards green transformation and transparency in environmental performance within the industry.
Since its official launch on May 19, 2022, China’s Steel Industry Full Industry Chain EPD Platform has been a trailblazer in China’s industrial sector, offering a standardized EPD platform. It has garnered substantial interest and active engagement from the entire steel supply chain, evolving into a global hub for disclosing and sharing product environmental performance data. The platform enables companies to quantify and openly communicate the environmental footprint of their products, including raw material extraction, manufacturing, processing, and final sale.
Achieving international recognition for EPD platforms is a cornerstone of the China Steel Full Industry Chain EPD Platform’s strategic development. The secretariat has been proactive in engaging with EPD platforms worldwide. In 2023, the EPD platforms counterparts in Italian and Swedish visited China, highlighting the global interest in China’s rapid advancement in this field.
The MOU with EPD platforms of Italy and Sweden will not only elevate the international standing of China’s EPD platform but also stimulate collaborative efforts and dialogue on environmental protection within the global steel community. It paves the way for Chinese steel enterprises to access international certification in a more convenient way and invigorates the sustainable development of the steel industry worldwide. The international cooperation facilitated by EPD platforms is set to harmonize environmental protection standards across the global steel industry, pooling efforts towards a shared vision of global environmental sustainability.
