CISA issues statement on supporting MOFCOM in response to the anti-discrimination investigation into Canada’s restrictive measures against China

The Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China issued a formal announcement to initiate an anti-discrimination investigation in response to restrictive measures implemented by the Government of Canada against China.

China’s steel exports to Canada are characterized by a limited quantity and a minor market share, yet they constitute a valuable addition to the Canadian steel market. These exports have been instrumental in fostering the growth of downstream industries within the Canadian steel sector. The Canadian authorities’ decision to disregard World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations and breach their commitments to the WTO by proposing an additional 25% tariff on Chinese steel is a typically unilateral and protectionist measure. It is fundamentally detrimental to the rules-based multilateral trading system, and poses a significant threat to the stability of the global steel industry chain and supply chain. The Chinese steel industry stands firmly in opposition to such discriminatory practices.

The anti-discrimination investigation by the Ministry of Commerce, conducted in accordance with the “Foreign Trade Law of the People’s Republic of China,” is a critical step towards preserving the order of foreign trade and to protect the rights and interests of the entities involved. The China Iron and Steel Association extend its unwavering support to the Chinese government in its efforts to conduct anti-discrimination investigations into restrictive measures, including the imposition of additional tariffs by Canada against China.
