CISA unveils “China Low Carbon Emission Steel” Standard
The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) announced the “Low Carbon Emission Steel Evaluation Method” at the 2024 Green Development Digital Supply Chain Conference on October 18, 2024, . This significant standard was spearheaded by Baowu Steel Group, with the collaborative efforts of 44 industry chain partners and over a hundred leading experts. Jiang Wei, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice Chairman, and Secretary-General of CISA, presented at the event to mark the occasion with a ceremonial launch.
Initiated in November 2022, the standard underwent two years of rigorous research and collective effort before being approved on September 29, 2024, and officially implemented just weeks later on October 18. This standard is a testament to the collective wisdom and dedication of 44 enterprises and institutions within the steel sector and over a hundred experts. It is underpinned by extensive data from approximately 350 million tons of crude steel production emissions in China, positioning it as one of the most comprehensive and informative standards of its kind globally.
Throughout its development, the standard-setting group fostered close communication and collaboration with leading international organizations focused on low carbon emission steel, including the International Energy Agency, Responsible Steel, German Low Carbon Emission Steel, and the Rocky Mountain Institute. The group also presented its research findings on prestigious platforms such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Moreover, during the standard-setting process, there was active engagement with representatives from downstream industries like automotive manufacturing, home appliances, and construction. This ensured that the standard incorporated the feedback and suggestions of end-users, enhancing its practicality and future-oriented approach.
As Jiang Wei emphasized in his speech, the official launch of the standard represents a significant milestone in the low-carbon journey of China’s steel industry. It is set to become a crucial link between low-carbon steel and green trade in downstream industries.
This “Low Carbon Emission Steel Evaluation Method” standard is a “Chinese solution” born out of the industry’s collective intelligence. It is not only a tangible demonstration of China’s steel industry’s commitment to emissions reduction but also a steadfast pursuit of sustainable development goals. It underscores China’s proactive role in promoting green and low-carbon development within the global steel industry. CISA is now working on developing supporting guidelines and conducting orderly assessments within the industry.
